THE CHALLENGE
Reality Kitchen has long operated a successful on-site training program for young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. To expand opportunities and engagement, they are now launching a rural initiative that teaches the same skills virtually. The client had already developed learning materials and Zoom class content but needed a centralized, password-protected app where students could log in, access weekly content, and connect to sessions.

THE PROCESS
As always, we began by presenting initial wireframes to the Reality Kitchen team, highlighting a simple user experience for their students. After a couple of rounds of feedback, we agreed on a clean, elegant, and easy-to-use design. The Emberex team adhered to WCAG best practices in designing for accessibility, including intuitive navigation, high-contrast elements, iconography for easier wayfinding, and large buttons and text fields to accommodate diverse abilities and learning styles.

VIDEO & PHOTO SHARING
The app’s gallery view offers a visually organized display of uploaded photos and videos from student bakers, promoting engagement and connection among classmates. Teachers can open the photo/video viewer to easily share their own uploaded content or showcase student work.

THE RESULTS
Working with Reality Kitchen to create an app that helps young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities develop real, hands-on job skills is a cause close to our hearts. We hope that our work on this app enhances participants' quality of life by providing opportunities for skill development, social interaction, and self-expression in a supportive digital environment.
